Ay Papi

This video performance is a slowed-down, bare version of perreo that ends up in an eerie and uncanny note. The performer, Giovanina Sequeira is being watched and directed. We don’t know who they are, only that they’re there. We don’t fully see her either, we never get a full view of her face, her body her intentions which makes her feel like she could be anyone or everyone. The piece becomes a quiet negotiation between control and surrender, visibility and anonymity, sensuality and restraint. By removing the music, the usual beats and cues, we’re left with just the body and its gestures.

What does it mean to keep performing when the usual context is stripped away? What does the body say when the rhythm is gone, but the watching continues?
