Natural

This video work is composed of clips from YouTube “natural makeup tutorials,” edited to loop the word natural alongside an ominous beep. Through repetition, the word's meaning turns unfamiliar. We become estranged from the original concept, immersed instead in a sterile, hyper-curated visual space that obscures what “natural” even looks like.

By isolating and repeating this one word, the piece invites reflection on how language, beauty standards, and media shape our perception of authenticity. If we are performing a “natural” look, then what is artificial? Who decides? Is natural always synonymous with good, true, or desirable? The viewer is left in that ambiguity, questioning not only the image but the language that constructs it.
